After deleting files using UnInstaller, why I am losing disk space instead of gaining it?
Check if you are running Norton's SmartCan, Microsoft DOS 6.0's Delete Sentry, or a similar program. These programs keep backups of the files you delete from your system. If any programs of this nature are running, turn them off if you do not want these files to be saved by both UnInstaller and the other program. See your DOS 6.0, Norton, or your deletion protection program manual for further details.
When I delete an application, why do I get an "Unable to backup system files" error?
This error is caused by the lack of some standard INI files. This is commonly a result of running under a third party shell that may replace standard components, such as File Manager. As a result, the INI files for the standard components may never be created.
You can correct this error by launching File Manager. This will force Windows to create the WINFILE.INI file that Setup Monitor is looking for.
This problem is also resolved by upgrading to the most recent version of UnInstaller
16-bit 3.00.24. You can download the update file U3PTCH.EXE.

Why is the SmartLinks scan accessing my floppy drive ?
During the scan of your system, UnInstaller 4 may try to access the A:\
drive. This is a result of analyzing shortcuts (LNK files) found in the
\Windows\Recent folder, any OLE drag/drop activity and other embedded
objects that have pointed to the A:\ drive. This scan does not require a
disk to be in the drive.

While running UnInstaller I get one of the following messages: "Cannot load custom control" or "Unsupported version of MHGCHK.VBX". How to I get rid of these errors?
The problem may be a bad copy of a program file named VER.DLL. To verify this, search your system for the file VER.DLL. It is normally found in the Windows System directory. If the file size is zero bytes, replace it with the file found on disk 2 of the UnInstaller installation set.
I have UnInstaller 16-bit and Windows 95. Should I upgrade to UnInstaller 32-bit?
If you are running Windows 95, you should upgrade to UnInstaller 32-bit. UnInstaller 32-bit is designed specifically for the Windows 95 environment. It has the Windows 95 user interface and takes advantage of Windows 95 enhancements, such as recognizing long file names. Since UnInstaller 16-bit was designed for Windows 3.1, it does not take full advantage of Windows 95 capabilities.
Running UnInstaller 16-bit under Windows 95 has some limitations. The Program Manager Sentry feature and Setup Monitor will not be operational.
While UnInstaller 32-bit looks a little different than UnInstaller 16-bit, both programs perform the same UnInstaller functions.
Some changes:
- UnInstaller 32-bit now enables the user to select multiple files for deletion using Windows conventions (using the Shift or Control keys and the mouse).
- UnInstaller 32-bit Orphan Finder does not allow the user delete unknown orphan files and does not display orphan DLL files. (This capability can be regained by downloading the file ORPHAN.REG.)
- There is not a Mark to Archive button under Windows Cleanup in UnInstaller 32-bit. Windows Cleanup is now archived providing the option under File/Preferences/Backup is selected.
- The UnInstaller Control Panel Applet (which lets you run UnInstaller from the Windows Control Panel) is not included in the 32-bit version of UnInstaller.
While running SmartLinks, I was dumped to a DOS prompt. What is wrong?
If you are running Norton Utilities, make sure you are not running SmartCan. If you are, turn it off then rebuild SmartLinks.
While deleting, I received the error "Cannot backup system configuration files". What does this mean?
Before deleting an application, UnInstaller tries to backup the CONFIG.SYS, the AUTOEXEC.BAT, the WIN.INI, the WINFILE.INI, and the SYSTEM.INI. If something is preventing it from doing so, the error will display.
The most common cause of this error is an extremely large number of files in the root directory. If the number of files there is greater than 400 then you have run into a DOS limitation of the number of files in the root directory. This would prevent UnInstaller from backing up the system files. You can move some files from the root directory to another directory to test if you have reached a DOS limitation.
Another cause is a missing WINFILE.INI. To correct this, run File Manager. When you run File Manager, a WINFILE.INI is automatically created.
After fixing these problems, try deleting again in UnInstaller.
Why do the files which I have deleted still show up in Duplicate File Finder?
Find the file named UNI3DUPE.DTB. It will be found in the UNI3 directory. Delete the file and regenerate the Duplicate File Finder list. The deleted files will not show up after this is done.
This problem is also resolved by upgrading to the most recent version of UnInstaller 16-bit, 3.00.24.
You can download the update U3PTCH.EXE
from our Web

You also need to add the following line to the [386Enh] section of your SYSTEM.INI file if it does not exist:

- From Notepad open C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI. (The path to your Windows directory may be something different.)

- Reboot your machine and load up UnInstaller again.
When I select an icon, sometimes I am presented with a dialog box which tells me that my selection contains a command line option and prompts me to select the Data File or Main Application. Which do I choose?
It depends. For example, you will be presented with this dialog box, at times, with a help file or a readme file. You will most likely want to choose the data file because the main application would be either the Windows Help Engine, used by many other help files, or a standard text editor such as Notepad.
Suppose you have selected an application such as Word, and it includes a command line option to call up a certain file when you open the application such as C:\Winword\Winword.exe letter.doc. It is probable that you will want to choose the main application since you selected this icon. You will be presented with an opportunity to deselect data files at a later point in the process.
Note: Pay close attention to what you have chosen in this dialog in case you selected an icon in error.
