95 Deluxe?
.No First Aid 95 Deluxe installs under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
I have Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 on
my system. Can I run First Aid 95 Deluxe under both?

I don't own First Aid 95 Deluxe. How
can I buy it?
First Aid 95 Deluxe is available at most retail stores and at the Internet Shopping Network. You also can
buy First Aid 95 Deluxe directly from CyberMedia by calling (800) 721-7824.
I live outside the United States and
can't use the toll-free 800 number. How can I order First Aid Deluxe by
phone?
You can find customer support for your country in our International section.
When I installed First id 95 Deluxe I
could not access my modem. How can I get First Aid 95 Deluxe and my
communications software to run simultaneously?
First Aid Deluxe installs several programs designed to monitor your system.
In order for such terminate-and-stay resident (TSR) programs to do their
job, they run continually in the background. Under rare circumstances,
these TSRs compete with First Aid 95 Deluxe for limited memory and system
resources. This competition can lead to problems such as the one described
above.
Find out which other programs are running in the background; First Aid 95
Deluxe might work with your online services when one or more of these
background programs is turned off. (See CyberMedia technical support
document #0007, "Problems with Background Programs," for details on this
procedure.)
On rare occasions, a communications program will not work properly after
First Aid 95 Deluxe is installed. First Aid 95 Deluxe checks COM ports to
monitor your system for potential crashes. Some communications drivers and
modems get finicky if other programs access their COM ports. In this case,
disable First Aid 95 Deluxe's monitor-testing by turning off the Crash
Protector and the Windows Guardian. To do this, try one of the following
solutions:
Solution #1:
- Turn off the computer (important if you are having modem problems).
- Turn on the computer and run Windows.
- Run First Aid 95 Deluxe.
- Press the Crash Proof PC button.
- Press the Crash Protector folder tab (green light).
- Press De-activate Now, and click Yes when asked whether to turn it off
permanently.
- Press the Windows Guardian folder tab.
- Press the Remove button and restart Windows.
- When Windows comes up run the online program.
Solution #2:
- Double click on NotePad from the Accessories Group of the Program Manager.
When the Notepad comes up, type: [INIT] OPENCOMM=0. Select Save As from the
File menu. Type DRWCFG.INI in the File Name field. Make sure the
Directories field is the Windows directory. (This should be the default if
you launch NotePad fro the Accessories Group.)
- Select Open from the File menu and type *.DBO. Select the First Aid
directory, which is normally C:\1STAID95 (in Windows 95). You should see
Firstaid.db0 in the box
- Add the following three lines (two lines of
text and a blank line) at the top of FIRSTAID.DBO: [ADDITIONAL HOOKS]
DRWCFG=1
- Now select Save from the File menu.
- Reboot Windows.
When I shut down Windows 95 I no
longer see the Window shut-down screen. All that appears is a DOS screen
that reads, "It is now safe to shut down your system." What should I
do?
You can fix this problem by correcting the PC configuration or obtaining a
new download.
How can I ensure proper
configuration of my First Aid 95 update?
- Install First Aid 95 before running the update.
- Download the proper files for your version.
- The updates will not work for First Aid v1.2. To request a copy of the
latest update, call CyberMedia customer service at (310) 581-4710, or send a message to
- Some users have reported success setting up
five temporary directories, e.g. Disk1, Disk2, etc., from which to run the
update. Other customers find that it helps to install the download form a
single directory. The situations varies from system to system.
- Make sure you have a temporary directory called TEMP, and make sure
this directory is empty before you install the update.
- Disable all background program before installing the update.
In Windows 3.1x, hit CTL-ESC, highlight each listing except Program
Manager, and click End Task. Repeat this procedure for each file
listed.
In Windows 95 the process is similar, except the key sequence is
CTL-ALT-Delete and the only program you should leave alone is
Explorer.
- After all other programs are disabled, you can safely update First
Aid
How can I know if I have a corrupted
download of First Aid?
If none of the fixes listed above works, there is a strong possibility that
the download is corrupt, or the files are not extracting properly. This is
also true if the download takes an unusually long time. (At 14,400 bps, a
2-MB file should take no longer than 30 minutes to download.) If you think
you have a corrupted download contact CyberMedia's customer service at
(310) 581-4710, or send an email message stating that you have a
corrupted download to custserv@cybermedia.com.
After installing the update, my
serial number shows as invalid. Why?
When you install the update, your new serial number shows as invalid. We
are aware of the problme and will correct it with a future update. In the
meantime, you are still registered and eligible for technical support, and
you are running a fully working version of First Aid 95 Deluxe.
When I try to use Internet-related
features of First Aid 95 Deluxe, I get an error message that says, "The
file FADLD16.DLL could not be found". What should I do?
FADLD15.DDL is a First Aid program file that is depndent on other .DDLs
that should hve been installed. Please make sure the following files are in
the First Aid directory:
newt.exe
snmp.dll
nmftp.dll
nmliib.dll
nmutil.dll
nmutl.dll
nmwebm.dll
gtools.dll
gtoolthk.dll
Also, the file WINSOCK.DLL should be in the Windows\directory, the
Windows\System\ directory or in your path. WINSOCK.DLL lets you access the
Internet without using AOL's built-in Internet tools (web browser, ftp,
Gopher, etc.) WINSOCK.DLL also lets you use Netscape as your web browser as
well as other third-party, Internet-access programs. If you are an AOL user
and the WINSOCK.DLL installed in your system is not from AOL (keyword:
winsock), you might receive an error message. please download the AOL
winsock made specifically for AOL and Windows 3.x users. (For detailed
information on Winsock, see CyberMedia document #0014.) If the above
conditions do not describe your problem, make your Internet connection
before running the updates.
If there is a sub directory in your First Aid directory called PCSETUP,
check this directory for a file called NEWT.EXE. If it is here, move it to
the First Aid directory.
I run Windows 3.1 and QEMM by
Quaterdeck. After I installed First Aid 95 Deluxe, my system showed a
General Protection Fault (GPF) when I tried to restart Windows. What should
I do? WEdit your WIN.INI file to see whether the line
C:\FIRSTAID\FAR_LNCH.EXE has been appended to another program's RUN= line.
If you find this:
RUN=C:\QEMM\QEMM.EXE C:\FIRSTAID/FAR_LNCH.EXE
then separate the lines like this:
RUN=C:\QEMM\QEMM.EXE
RUN=C:\FIRSTAID/FAR_LNCH.EXE
For more information on GPFs see CyberMedia document #0015.
When I load or shut down Windows, I
get the message "Fatal Error [5017] Cannot Take Snapshot". What should I
do? In the File Manager (Windows 3.1) or the Explorer
(Windows 95) locate the First Aid file RFINIT32.EXE and double click on it;
This will force a snapshot and start the RetroFix monitor.
I can't create an emergency
start-up disk. I get either the error message "SYS.COM could not be found",
or I lock up with some other error. What should I do? Because
of the version of DOS you run, you need to instruct First Aid 95 Deluxe to
make the disk to your C drive. This action copies all files to the
directory system disk, and then you have a boot disk.
To format a system disk, go to the File Manager and
- Choose Disk.
- Choose Format.
- Choose Full and Copy System Files.
- When that disk is fully formatted (or reformatted) copy all the files
in the C:\FIRSTAID\STARTUP directory to the disk.
When I start First Aid 95 Deluxe I
get and error message regarding a file called CTL3D32.DLL. What should I
do? First Aid 95 Deluxe's version of this .DLL is slightly
different than the one originally installed by another program on your
system. If First Aid sees the original file on the computer during
installation, First Aid will not copy over the file. Locate all the
CTL3D32.DLL files in your system and rename the CTL3D32.OLD.
To do this:
- Use the Search feature located in the drop-down File menu of the File
Manager (for Windows 3.1) or in the Explorer (for Windows 95) to locate the
CTL3D32.DLL file.
- Use the Rename feature in the File menu to rename the file to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTL3D32.OLD.
- Uninstall First Aid 95 Deluxe by running SETUP.EXE from the first
program disk or from the DISK1 directory on the CD-ROM.
- Then you'll get a prompt to uninstall the program. If you have used
First Aid 95 Deluxe to make changes to your system, answer Yes to the
question "Do you want to save to the log file?"
When I shut down Windows, I lock
up with no error message. What should I do? Make sure you
are running version 3.1 of First Aid 95 Deluxe, and if not, update
your program. Otherwise, the lockup is due to a conflict between the Crash
Guard and another program at the time you close Windows. The easiest
solution is to disable Crash Guard before you end your Windows sessions.
Press CTRL-ALT-Delete to load the Close Program window. End Task on any
program that is running. You will need to single click on the line that
says either FAGUARD or FA_GD32, then click on the End Task button. Now you
will be able to close Windows without locking up.
