I get an error message when I try to install First Aid. What should I do?
Software conflicts are the main cause of installation problems in Windows 95. These conflicts occur when you try to install an application while other applications are running in memory. There are literally thousands of applications available on the market, and this makes it impossible to account for all potential conflicts between memory resident programs. As a consequence, the best way to ensure a successful installation is to disable all memory resident programs before installing First Aid.

Please follow these steps to successfully install not only First Aid , but any other application as well:

  1. Disable all applications running in the background: hold down the CTRL+ALT keys on your keyboard, and then press the DEL key once. The Close Program dialog box appears. Click End Task for every item on the list except Explorer.
  2. Click the Cancel button once you see only Explorer in the Close Program dialog box.
  3. Now you are ready to run the setup program from the First Aid CD.
Note: The above steps temporarily disable memory resident applications. To start these applications again, restart your PC.

Should I install First Aid 98 over First Aid 97?
First Aid 98 will automatically uninstall any earlier version of First Aid. If you've used the trim applications feature in an earlier version of First Aid, you should restore trimmed components before the install (First Aid 98 cannot use the trim applications data from earlier versions of First Aid). In addition, if you want to undo any First Aid fixes that were made with an earlier version of First Aid, make sure to undo them before installing First Aid 98.

Why is Internet Explorer installed during First Aid installation?
First Aid uses a Microsoft technology called "ActiveX." In order to take advantage of ActiveX technology, the First Aid installation installs Internet Explorer 3.02 on your PC (unless you already have IE 3.02 or later already installed). First Aid uses the Windows extensions for the Internet that are included in this version of Internet Explorer. These extensions are already part of the latest release of Windows 95 (OSR2).

Why can't I use Netscape Navigator instead of Internet Explorer?
First Aid 98 uses a technology called ActiveX. Currently, the only way to get the extensions for ActiveX is to have Internet Explorer 3.02 or higher. Netscape Navigator cannot be used as a platform for First Aid 98 because it does not currently support ActiveX technology. This does not mean that you cannot continue to use Netscape as your browser of choice, just that First Aid 98 needs ActiveX to run properly. If the situation changes in the future, we will consider using Netscape as a platform.

Why not use Java?
While Java is a great platform for developing web-based applications, it is not designed for writing system-level software for Windows.

If I'm using Windows 3.1 or Windows NT, can I run First Aid?
At the present time, First Aid runs only under Windows 95. If you are using Windows 3.1, you can use First Aid 3.1 for Windows 3.1. First Aid does not yet support Windows NT. Please check CyberMedia's Web Site for late breaking news about First Aid's capabilities.

Does First Aid work with Windows 98?
Microsoft has not officially released Windows 98; therefore no released product can claim to run under Windows 98. However, CyberMedia is committed to supporting the latest Windows technology. Please check CyberMedia's Web site for late breaking news about First Aid's capabilities.

Why should I update First Aid if I just bought it yesterday?
First Aid gets smarter over time when you update its knowledge base. First Aid uses CyberMedia's Oil Change technology and the Internet to automatically update itself. These updates include such things as minor modifications, conflict fixes, and additional support for newly released hardware and software. Simply click Update Now! and First Aid does the rest.

What is Oil Change and why is its technology included with First Aid?
Oil Change is a CyberMedia product that automatically locates, downloads, and installs updates to applications and drivers on your PC using your existing Internet connection. First Aid utilizes the Oil Change technology to provide the following services:

  • automatically updates the First Aid application
  • automatically updates the First Aid knowledge base, increasing the number of problems that First Aid can identify and resolve
Oil Change is a paid service independent of First Aid. A limited subscription (limited to updating First Aid itself) to Oil Change is included with First Aid. Please check CyberMedia's Web site if you'd like to purchase a complete Oil Change subscription or sign up for a trial subscription

What if I already have a full subscription to Oil Change?
First Aid requires the most recent Oil Change technology, which does not affect your Oil Change subscription. When you purchase Oil Change, what you are paying for is the subscription. Therefore it is the Oil Change serial number that is essential for a valid Oil Change subscription, not the Oil Change software itself .

Why can't I register as an Oil Change user with the serial number that came with First Aid?
The First Aid serial number is not the same thing as the Oil Change serial number. The Oil Change subscription provided with First Aid only updates First Aid and does not require a serial number.

How do I uninstall First Aid?

  • Click Start on the Windows taskbar.
  • Point to Programs.
  • Point to CyberMedia First Aid 98.
  • Click Uninstall First Aid 98.

Conflict Resolution

  • If your PC is misbehaving, First Aid will scan your entire PC to see if conflicts caused by buggy software, conflicting standards, or incorrect registry settings are the culprit.
