Can I click the Update button in First Aid 95 to get First Aid 97?
No. First Aid 95 and First Aid 97 are separate programs. First Aid 97 can be purchased at most software stores or from CyberMedia Sales at (800) 721-7824.

Will First Aid 97 work with Windows 98?
Microsoft has not officially released Windows 98, therefore no released product can claim to run under Windows 98. However, CyberMedia is committed to supporting the latest Windows technology.

Does First Aid 97 work with the new version of Windows 95 that supports the 32-bit file structure?
Yes, all releases of First Aid 97 work with the new version of Windows 95.

What are the main differences between First Aid 95 and First Aid 97?
Only First Aid 97:

  • Provides one button that checks your whole system for problems.
  • Performs a continuous background check of the system memory and hard disk free space.
  • Constantly monitors your hard drive for imminent failure and warns you of potential problems in advance.
  • Revives frozen applications with CPR.
  • Offers point-and-click advice on your computer problems.
  • Provides a complete glossary of technical terms.
  • Searches the Internet for solutions, including fixes for a program that causes a crash.
Many features in First Aid 95 have been enhanced in First Aid 97. Now First Aid 97 can:
  • Fix more configuration and setup problems with Windows applications.
  • Intercept more types of crashes with Crash Protector.
  • Check your multimedia with greater precision and reliability.
  • Monitor more areas of your system with Windows Guardian.

Why should I update First Aid if I just bought it yesterday?
We are continually improving First Aid by increasing the number of problems that it can detect and fix. Using CyberMedia's Oil Change technology, First Aid uses the Internet to automatically update itself. These updates include such things as minor modifications, bug fixes, and additional support for newly released hardware and software. It costs nothing to update your software. Simply click Update and First Aid does the rest.

What ever happened to the feature called RetroFix in First Aid 95?
RetroFix has been replaced in First Aid 97 with a new feature called BackTrack. If you have replaced First Aid 95 with First Aid 97, BackTrack will read your old RetroFix snapshots.

Can I run First Aid 97 off the CD or do I have to install it?
You must install the base program files. During installation, you must choose either to install the First Aid knowledge base and Advisor files on your hard disk (which enables portions of the program to run faster) or leave these files on the CD (which may sacrifice speed, but reduces the program's disk space requirement by 20MB). If you elect to leave these files on the CD, First Aid reminds you to insert the CD as needed.

Where is the Doctor Solomon anti-virus program? I don't have a disk for it.
The program is on the First Aid 97 CD. To install it, do the following:

  1. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive. If the setup program doesn't start automatically, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive, then double-click Setup.
  2. In the Setup program, click the second option. It will be called either Install Other Programs or Explore this CD.
  3. Double-click Install Dr. Solomon's FindVirus.
How does the First Aid 97 Trim App feature in the Applications Specialist differ from uninstaller-type programs, such as CleanSweep?
Trim App allows you to compress, or shrink, certain application files to free up storage space on your hard disk. As long as First Aid is installed on your computer, you can use Trim App to restore these files to their full size at any time. Uninstaller programs serve a different purpose entirely-they permanently remove applications from your hard disk.

I used Trim App to trim my application and now it doesn't run. Why not?
Trim App divides applications into two categories: supported and unsupported (supported applications are designated with a small cross in First Aid's Applications Specialist. In supported applications, certain features, such as the grammar checker for a word processor, can be trimmed without affecting the main program. Unsupported applications, however, cannot run as long as they are trimmed. If you cannot run a trimmed application, use Trim App to restore it to its full size.

Can I restore a trimmed application after uninstalling First Aid?
No. The only way to restore your trimmed applications is to use Trim App in First Aid. If you plan to uninstall First Aid, make sure that you first restore all trimmed applications.

What is Oil Change and why is it in First Aid 97?
Oil Change automatically locates, downloads, and installs updates to software on your PC using your existing Internet connection. First Aid 97 includes a limited subscription to Oil Change that provides the following services:

  • automatically updates the First Aid 97 program
  • automatically updates the First Aid 97 knowledge base, thus increasing the number of problems that First Aid can identify and solve
  • enables Crash Protector to search for updates to crashed programs.

The complete subscription to Oil Change is a paid service independent of First Aid that looks for updates to all of your computer's supported software. You can purchase the complete subscription or you can take sign up for a trial subscription. A trial subscription lets you search for and download a limited number of applications.

What if I purchased Oil Change in the box or over the Internet and already have First Aid 97?
Because First Aid already contains the software component of Oil Change, there is no need to install the any additional Oil Change software. When you purchase Oil Change, what you are paying for is the subscription. Therefore it is the Oil Change serial number that matters, not the floppy disks.

Why can't I register as an Oil Change user with the serial number that came with First Aid 97?
The First Aid serial number is not the same thing as the Oil Change serial number. You no longer need the First Aid serial number to register your copy of First Aid. The Oil Change service provided with First Aid 97 is a limited version and does not require a serial number.

Why isn't Crash Protector preventing my system from crashing or locking up?
No program can prevent other programs from crashing. Crashes are caused by programming errors, and only updates to the offending programs can fix those errors. Crash Protector intercepts crashes and allows you to save your work. It also gives you the option of searching the Internet for an update to the offending program that may prevent future crashes.
