First Aid 97 Troubleshooting
Frequently Asked Questions
A Note About Updates:
We are constantly working to improve First Aid 97. Many problems can be fixed simply by updating your program. Updating costs nothing. Simply click the Update button and First Aid will update itself using your Internet connection. If clicking Update fails to connect you to the Internet, dial up your Internet service provider first and then try again.
A Note About Restarting Your Computer:
If you run into a problem, you may be able to fix it by closing all your open programs, shutting down Windows, and then restarting your computer. This sounds simple, but surprisingly it often does the trick.

When I try to install or run First Aid 97 I get the following message: "Error starting program. A required .DLL file MSVCRT.DLL was not found."
On some computers, MSVCRT.DLL does not copy properly from the FA97 CD. When this file is missing you will see the message, "Error starting program - A required .DLL file MSVCRT.DLL was not found." when you try to install or run First Aid 97. The solution is to manually copy the file from the FA97 CD to the \Windows\System folder. You must then install FA97 normally.
To copy MSVCRT.DLL
- Place the First Aid 97 CD in your CD-ROM player. If the Install Window opens, close it by clicking the 'x' in the upper-right corner of the window.
- Open Windows 95 Explorer. (Click Start, point to Programs, click Windows Explorer.)
- In the left column, click Firstaid_97 (D). (Your CD-ROM drive may use a letter other than "D.") A new list of folders and files appears in the right column.
- Right-click MSVCRT.DLL and click Copy. If MSVCRT.DLL isn't listed, go to the Explorer menu and click View, point to Options, and click the box next to Show All Files.
- In the left column, locate your Windows 95 folder and double-click it. Typically, the folder is labeled Windows, Win95, or Windows 95. A new list of folders and files appear in the right column.
- In the left column, right-click the System folder and click Paste. The file should now appear in the System folder. To verify that the file was copied, double-click System and locate MSVCRT.DLL.
- Install First Aid 97 again.
When I start up First Aid 97, I get an error message
that references the file FATRC32.
Try rebooting your computer and starting First Aid 97
again. If this doesn't work use Update to update your
copy of First Aid 97.
How can I get First Aid 97 to detect my modem or sound
card?
Click Options, click Properties, select the PC Profile
tab, and click Auto-Detect Now. First Aid searches
automatically for your hardware. If the problem
persists, use Update to update your copy of First Aid
97. Then click Auto-Detect Now. First Aid should find
your hardware.
What is QuickTime, and why does First Aid tell me it's
a problem?
QuickTime is one of a number of software programs that
allow you to play digital motion picture video on your
computer. Not everybody has it, and not everybody needs
it. If you don't want QuickTime, just click Fix
Problems and click Ignore in Future and First Aid will
forget about it. Or you can go to the web site where
you can download QuickTime.
What is MPEG, and why does First Aid tell me it's a
problem?
MPEG is a standard for a number of software programs
that allow you to play digital motion picture video on
your computer. Not everybody has it, and not everybody
needs it. If you want to find out more about MPEG,
contact your video card manufacturer. It's easy to
locate the web sites of computer manufacturers using
CyberMedia's Tech Support Yellow Pages.
Sometimes when I step away from my computer and the
screen goes black, it locks up. Why?
Some computers, such as the Compaq Presario and many
laptops, have a feature called "sleep mode" that turns
off the display screen after a certain period of
inactivity. Older versions of First Aid 97 can conflict
with sleep mode and cause your computer to lock up. To
solve this problem use Update to update your copy of
First Aid 97. In the meantime, you can prevent this
from happening by disabling BackTrack Monitor.
- Click Options
- Click Properties
- Select the Windows Guardian tab
- Uncheck BackTrack Monitor
- Restart your computer.
Why does my system become unresponsive at shutdown?
When I type Ctrl-Alt-Del, it says "RTFIXM32 - not
responding."
This problem is caused by a memory conflict between
First Aid's BackTrack Monitor feature and another
software program installed on your computer. You can
fix this problem one of two ways: Either call the
vendor of the offending program and find out how you
can disable it, or you can disable BackTrack Monitor.
If you choose to disable BackTrack Monitor
- Click Options
- Click Properties
- Select the Windows Guardian tab
- Uncheck BackTrack Monitor
- Restart your computer.
How can I print the list of problems detected when I
run Check-Up?
The only way to print the list of problems is to print
the Problem Log, a file that is automatically
maintained by First Aid. To add a problem to the
Problem Log, highlight the problem and click Fix
Problems. (If you want to save the problem and
solutions in a separate file, click Report). Click
Close, then repeat the process for each problem. The
Problem Log can be printed by clicking Options, Problem
Log, then Print.
Why won't First Aid 97 fix my corrupted registry?
If your Windows registry was corrupted before you
installed First Aid, First Aid cannot fix it. However,
it is possible to restore the registry to its state
when you last successfully started Windows 95 by
following the steps found in Microsoft's knowledge base
(Article ID Q131431). (See also articles Q132064 and
Q131352.)
First Aid said that my menu pop-up rate was too slow,
so I clicked AutoFix. Now the rate is too fast. How can
I restore the former rate?
There are two solutions to this problem. Try them in
the following order: Solution Number One: Undo the Fix.
- Click Undo in the First Aid 97 window.
- Highlight the fix listed that says it changed the
MenuShowDelay.
- Click Undo.
- Reboot your computer.
Solution Number Two: Correct the Problem Manually
(WARNING: Do not make any other changes to your
registry. If you corrupt your registry by mistake, you
may render the computer inoperable.)
- Click Start on the Windows taskbar.
- Click Run.
- Type "regedit" and click OK.
- Double-click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
- Double-click Control Panel.
- Double-click desktop.
- On the right side of the window, right-click
MenuShowDelay.
- Select Modify.
- Change the value to 150.
- Close the Registry Editor.
- Reboot your computer.
