CyberMedia Acquires MicroHelp Uninstaller
Adds Best-Selling, Award-Winning Uninstall Software to Automatic Service and Support Product Line

SANTA MONICA, CA - April 4, 1997 - In an move to strengthen its position as a leading developer of automatic service and support software for personal computers, CyberMedia (r) Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS:CYBR) today announced that it has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to MicroHelp Uninstaller (tm) from Los Angeles-based Luckman Interactive.

"This acquisition enhances our problem-fixing technology, leverages our retail and international marketing strengths, and rounds out our product line so we can offer a more complete solution to the most common PC problems," said Unni Warrier, president and CEO of CyberMedia.

By adding Uninstaller to its product line, CyberMedia will now market three of America's top 15 best-selling retail business software titles - First Aid 97 (r) (#4), Oil Change (tm) (#15) and Uninstaller (#9). (According to January, 1997 PC Data Report.)

Uninstaller is the world's number one best-selling PC Windows cleanup software, available in retail stores in the US, Europe and Japan, and widely recognized by leading personal computer magazines as the best uninstall utility in the industry. It was rated "Editor's Choice" in the April 8, 1997 issue of PC Magazine.

CyberMedia expects to ship Uninstaller, with new packaging, to stores worldwide in the second quarter of 1997. Effective immediately, all Uninstaller marketing support, distribution, customer service and future development will be handled by CyberMedia. Utilizing their exclusive Oil Change (tm) automatic update technology, CyberMedia will modify Uninstaller so later versions of its knowledge base can be easily updated via the Internet with the latest problem-fixing information.

Enhances Problem-Fixing Technology
The acquisition is strategically important to CyberMedia because the technology in Uninstaller is compatible with CyberMedia's existing problem-fixing technologies, all based on its underlying ActiveHelp (tm) architecture.

Using a common ActiveHelp technology, all CyberMedia products first scan the PC to search for potential problems locally. They then automatically reach out via the Internet to HelpCentral (TM), a vast knowledge base of continually-updated problem-fixing information that is stored on CyberMedia's Internet server. The Uninstaller knowledge base contains detailed information on critical .dll (dynamic link library) files and links - information that can be stored on HelpCentral and utilized by current and future CyberMedia products.

Fixes Wider Range of Problems
A significant number of PC problems occur when applications are not removed properly. Too often, users just delete an application folder, thinking that they have removed all traces left by the application, when in fact all the 'links' that point to it are still installed. In addition, they might delete shared 'dlls' which can cause other programs that depend on that 'dll file' to stop working.

"Uninstaller is the perfect addition to our strategy to offer a complete automatic service and support solution to all personal computer users. Many people mistakenly believe that Windows 95 eliminated the need for uninstallers. In fact, Windows 95 uninstalls only a small subset of applications," said CyberMedia chief technology officer Brad Kingsbury. "With this acquisition, CyberMedia has not only gained a market leader - we are substantially improving our ability to fix and prevent a wider range of PC problems."

Award-Winning Bestseller
Uninstaller frees up hard disk space, safely and easily, by removing unused applications on Windows 95 or NT systems. Uninstaller scans your system and identifies all the relationships between programs and files. It then automatically decides which files are safe to remove and doesn't touch the ones you need - never removing a critical Windows system file.

Following comprehensive tests, PC Magazine, which awarded both CyberMedia's First Aid 97 and Uninstaller 4.0 its prestigious "Editor's Choice" award, noted: "Uninstaller 4 upholds the program's long-standing reputation for safety, power and simplicity...Uninstaller is the ideal housecleaner for your overstuffed system."

In addition to Editor's Choice, Uninstaller has received the Computer Reseller News Test Center "Recommended", HomeOffice Computing Editors' Pick, PC Magazine Technical Innovation and Windows Magazine Win 100 awards.
