CyberMedia Expands Strategic Partnership With Sony

First Aid and Oil Change Software Will Ship with All New Sony Multimedia PCs

Customized Versions of CyberMedia's Automatic Service and Support Software Can Reduce Support Costs; Make PCs "Self-Healing"

NEW YORK, NY - PC Expo, Booth 402 - June 17, 1997 -CyberMedia (NASDAQ:CYBR) and Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:PTEC) today announced a technology licensing agreement with Sony Electronics, one of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers, to bundle customized versions of CyberMedia's best-selling First Aid 97(tm) and Oil Change(r) software products into the new Sony multimedia PCs. This agreement expands upon the initial CyberMedia/Sony relationship announced in January, 1997 that bundled Oil Change on an earlier VAIO (tm) desktop PC model. Notebook PCs. Financial terms of the license were not disclosed.

Oil Change will be pre-installed on the new Sony PCs, based on the Intel MMX processors, including the PCV-130 and PCV-150 VAIO desktop computers, as well as the VAIO PCG-705 and PCG-707 VAIO notebook PCs.

Since January 1997, Sony VAIO PCs have included a customized version of CyberMedia's Oil Change software - an Internet software product that lowers support costs by automatically updating PC software and hardware "drivers" by giving PCs a "digital oil change." CyberMedia engineers will now provide Sony with a custom-tuned version of First Aid designed to specifically fix problems with the wide array of leading-edge software products pre-installed on the VAIO PCs. First Aid has sold over 2 million copies to date and received several awards including the coveted PC Magazine "Editor's Choice".

"We chose to bundle First Aid because we were very happy with the results we achieved from pre-installing CyberMedia Oil Change," said Tac Sugiyama, Director of Marketing for Sony Information Technologies, a divisional company of Sony Electronics. "From the packaging to the pre-installed software, the VAIO PCs are designed inside and out for ease of use and to appeal to the desires of the mass consumer. With both First Aid and Oil Change inside, the VAIO PC can now self-heal many common problems and stay up to date as new multimedia standards emerge. This can reduce our technical support call volume and offer more value to our customers."

"We have been able to strengthen our partnership with Sony because we both passionately believe that ease of use is absolutely crucial if the industry is going to make PCs appeal to a wider market of mass consumers," said Unni Warrier, president and CEO of CyberMedia. "Families and gamers are not interested in tweaking their PCs or messing with crashes and conflicts - they just want to pull it out of the box, switch it on and use it like a household appliance."

Lowering customer support costs is an increasingly important goal for PC manufacturer - many are spending as much as 10 percent of total revenues on customer service and technical support. CyberMedia's automatic problem-fixing software can ease the technical support burden for users and manufacturers alike. Other manufacturers currently shipping CyberMedia's automatic service and support software on their latest PCs include AST, Fujitsu, and Packard Bell-NEC. Leading retailer CompUSA is also shipping CyberMedia's First Aid and Oil Change products with every extended service agreement sold with new PCs.
