NEW YORK, NY - PC Expo, Booth 402 - June 17, 1997 - CyberMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS: CYBR) announces the first significant revision of its award-winning Oil Change(tm) automatic update software for Windows(r) 95 -- available June 18, 1997 free of charge to all registered users and new retail buyers. Users simply hit the "Update" button and Oil Change will give itself an "oil change" and automatically transform into the new version, via the Internet.
The world's first and best-selling automatic software update service, Oil Change makes it fast and easy to keep personal computers up to date for glitch-free operation and peak performance. Using the Internet, it gives PCs a "digital oil change" by automatically replacing outdated, buggy software and hardware 'drivers' with clean, new updates.
"CyberMedia pioneered the one-button automatic software update," says CyberMedia President and CEO Unni Warrier, "Now we're the first to raise the bar and redefine the standard for automatic software updating technology. We did this by listening to our customers. Oil Change users have suggested many of the improvements we're adding - particularly the game updates."
The new Oil Change sets a higher industry standard for automatic software update technology by adding several significant new features:
- Now updates over 500 of the most popular PC games - with more on the way.
- Pre-scheduled, unattended online sessions - update while you sleep and avoid downloading huge files during Internet traffic jams.
- Makes clever use of "push" technology to automatically notify users when updates to their favorite software and hardware become available.
- Multiple undo - lets users cancel more than one update if they change their mind.
- Retrieves several updates simultaneously.
Avoid Info Highway Traffic Jams
Users can now schedule Oil Change to check for new versions of their software and drivers automatically - even while they sleep or are away from the office. For example, Oil Change will "push" its own "Update" button every Tuesday at 2 a.m.
Retrieving updates is more automatic now, too. As a user peruses the available updates that Oil Change finds, he or she can select any number of them for an unattended automatic retrieval session, either immediately or as scheduled.
Once Oil Change fetches the necessary files, it shows a list of the updates it's ready to do. Oil Change has always been able to undo the last update it performed; now, it can separately undo the latest update for each application or driver.
Now Updates 1,000 Games
In addition to updates for over 1,000 software applications and hardware "drivers", Oil Change now adds the most popular game software, a frequent customer request. Coverage for hundreds of games is already in place, and CyberMedia intends to continually add support for more as new products arrive on the market.
Notifies with "Push" Technology
Since timely updates can be quite critical for some applications or drivers, Oil Change also adds the ability to notify a user automatically when a new update appears, and automatically schedule it for retrieval. Oil Change notifies the user again once it has retrieved the update files and is ready for the user to install them.
This feature uses "push" technology - a new Internet technology that lets Oil Change schedule online chores for quiet times or take advantage of spare bandwidth while a user is surfing the Web or reading e-mail. Oil Change is compatible with the "push" mechanisms in upcoming versions of the most popular web browsers.
Pricing and Availability
Oil Change is now available at more than 10,000 retailers in North America, via online resellers on the World Wide Web, pre-installed in hardware from leading PC vendors, and direct from CyberMedia's web site for a suggested U.S. street price of $39.95. This includes a one-year subscription to the product.

Requires a 100% IBM-compatible 486 or Pentium PC with Windows 95; at least 8 MB RAM; VGA or better monitor; 14.4 or higher modem; 6 MB of hard disk space and an Internet connection through an Internet service provider or online service.
