CyberMedia Ships Oil Change

Automatically updates thousand of software programs over the Internet.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., October 16, 1996 - After an extensive beta testing program involving 45,000 volunteer users, CyberMedia's much anticipated Oil Change software is now available in retail stores nationwide for $39.95. It can also be purchased from CyberMedia's Internet Web site at http://www.cybermedia.com, America Online forum (keyword: CYBERMEDIA) or CompuServe forum (GO CYBERMEDIA).

Oil Change automatically replaces outdated, buggy software and hardware 'drivers' with clean, new updates. It provides an automatic, one-stop update service that makes it fast and easy to keep personal computers up to date for glitch-free operation and peak performance. This essential maintenance chore is complex and time-consuming if performed manually.

"The best kept secret of the computer industry is that as soon as you purchase software it is often already 'stale'-- in other words, several bugs have been identified and fixed since it reached the shelf, or new features have been added, but you have no way of knowing this," said Unni Warrier, president and CEO of CyberMedia. "Oil Change helps you get the performance and features you deserve from the software you've already paid for."

Supports Thousands of Products and Updates
Oil Change currently supports thousands of products and updates. This includes plug-ins, add-ons and other enhancements for popular software applications from Microsoft, Lotus, Corel, Delrina, Starfish, Broderbund, ActiVision, Software Publishing Corp., Quarterdeck, Adobe, Claris, Novell, Macromedia, Fractal Design, WordPerfect, Intuit, McAfee, MicroHelp, Netscape, America Online, and more. New updates for additional product are added to the Oil Change database on a daily basis and become available immediately to all registered users.

Driver updates will be provided for Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Brother and Canon printers; 3COM, AST, Boca Research, IBM, US Robotics, Cardinal and Supra Corporation modems; Ad Lib, Chips and Technologies, Cirrus Logic and Diamond Multimedia video cards; Turtle Beach, Aztech Labs, Creative Labs, Ensoniq, miro, and Crystal Semiconductor sound cards and chips; Panasonic and OPTi CD-ROM players; and more. Oil Change also finds and installs plug-ins -- small software applications that add significant capabilities to larger software applications -- from companies such as Adobe, Corel and others.

Industry Support for Oil Change
Many companies already endorse and support the Oil Change software update technology, including BestWare, Cheyenne Software, Diamond Multimedia, EarthLink, Fractal Design, Macromedia, McAfee Associates, MicroHelp, NetManage, Packard Bell - NEC and Phoenix Technologies.

"McAfee is proud to be a charter member of CyberMedia's Medallion Partner Program. Oil Change is a leadership product setting the standard for the future of software delivery, said Gene Hodges, Director of Electronic Commerce, McAfee Associates. When a new virus is detected, Oil Change lets our users get the latest anti-virus protection quickly, easily and safely, as soon as it's available. The best part about Oil Change is it delivers anti-virus updates automatically -- directly from our Web site."

The Oil Change Medallion Program provides a method for CyberMedia to obtain timely notification of available updates from software manufacturers. CyberMedia intends to support the industry's most popular software whether or not the manufacturer joins the Medallion program.

System Requirements
Oil Change requires a 100% IBM-compatible 486 or Pentium PC with Windows 95; at least 8 MB RAM; VGA or better monitor; 14.4 or higher modem, 6 MB of hard disk space and an Internet connection through an Internet service provider or online service.
