CyberMedia's Oil Change Is Now The #1 Best-Selling
Retail Internet Software
Seizes #7 Slot On PC Data Hits List In Its First Quarter on Market, Outselling Netscape Navigator in Retail Stores
First Aid Moves Up To #4
SANTA MONICA, CA - February 5, 1997 -- CyberMedia's Oil Change and First Aid were two of the top ten best-selling business software programs in the U.S.
during December, according to lists released by PC Data last week. Oil Change, in its first quarter on the market, was the best-selling Internet software program - outselling Netscape's Navigator -- and the seventh best-selling business program overall. CyberMedia's First Aid, which has been a consistent top-ten best seller every month since November, 1995, bumped up to the #4 slot.
"The reason why Oil Change is such a rapid success is that it's an absolute necessity," said Warrier. "Like other "must haves," such as anti-virus software, every single PC user at every ability level needs Oil Change, and it is so automatic that even a rank beginner can use it."
Oil Change is the first product that uses the Internet to give PC's a digital "oil change." It searches the Internet and automatically installs the latest updates, "patches," drivers and bug fixes for today's most widely-used computer software. This simple, one-button maintenance procedure ensures that PC owners get the latest enhancements for the software they already own. A subscription to Oil Change costs $39.95, and includes quarterly updates for one year.
"Until now, the only best-selling Internet products were tools that help you design web sites, or software that helps you gain Internet access, like browsers. Oil Change is the first in the next wave of Internet-enabled products -- software that interacts with or utilizes information from the Internet in useful ways," said CyberMedia President and CEO Unni Warrier.
"Oil Change is also revolutionary because it is the first subscription-based software application to hit the retail software bestseller lists," Warrier added. "Until now, the only retail software products based on this model were Internet services, such as CompuServe. As the Internet grows, you can expect to see more products following this annuity-based revenue model."
CODIE AWARD FINALIST
Oil Change has also been named a finalist for the Software Publishing Association's prestigious Excellence in Software Awards (Codie Awards) in the category of "Best Internet/On-line Product or Service." The Codie Awards honor the achievements of software publishers for creativity and innovation. Nominees and winners are considered by SPA's 1,200 software industry member companies to be the best of the year.
"The Codie nomination is validation of the stature we have attained in the industry in a very short amount of time," said Warrier. "We are competing with many companies I admire, including Microsoft, Netscape and American Online."
THE INDUSTRY UPDATE STANDARD
Oil Change is rapidly becoming the industry standard for automatic software updates. Leading PC vendors, including Sony, are now incorporating customized versions of CyberMedia's Oil Change as a solution to spiraling technical support costs. Other industry leaders who have endorsed the Oil Change update technology include Macromedia, NetManage, BestWares, Fractal Design, ActiVision, Novell and Cirrus Logic. Oil Change updates over 2,000 products and updates are continually added as new multimedia standards, software and hardware products emerge.
CyberMedia is also partnering with Phoenix Technologies, the world's largest supplier of system-level software used in more than 17 million PCs, to bring its problem solving solutions to other leading hardware manufacturers.
