Broderbund Brings in CyberMedia's Oil Change(tm) Automatic Update Technology to Enhance Customer Enjoyment of its Game Software
Easy Internet Updates to the Latest Drivers and Patches Speed Users to the Fun of Riven(tm), Warlords(tm) III, and Take No Prisoners(tm)
Santa Monica, Calif. -- November xx, 1997 -- In an agreement that demonstrates the growing importance of automatic service and support to enhance customer satisfaction levels, CyberMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYBR) announced today an agreement with Broderbund Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:BROD). Through its Web site, Broderbund is offering CyberMedia's Oil Change(tm) automatic software update technology to all users of its PC games, including Riven(tm), the long-awaited sequel to Myst®, the best-selling computer game of all time.
With Oil Change, Broderbund makes it easy for customers who buy any game titles published by its Red Orb Entertainment Division, including Riven, Warlords(tm) III or Take No Prisoners(tm) to update their computer systems to the latest sound and video drivers and patches. Broderbund expects to enhance customer satisfaction levels by making it quicker and easier for game players to get to the fun of actually playing the game.
"Our products are designed for entertainment," said Ken Goldstein, vice president and general manager of Broderbund's Red Orb Entertainment Division. "Outdated drivers in the user's computer can undermine this experience, and conventional methods for obtaining updates can be frustrating and time-consuming, especially for new users. Our goal is to make it easy for our customers to improve the performance of their systems, so they can have the best possible experience with our products. CyberMedia's Oil Change provides an ideal automatic update solution for our customers."
Available Now at the Broderbund Web Site
Oil Change recognizes whether Riven--or another Broderbund game--is installed, scans the PC, and automatically identifies incompatible sound, video, and other device software (drivers) that can interfere with Riven's rich music, vivid ambient sound, and gorgeous visuals. If needed, Oil Change also locates Broderbund software patches to augment the game itself. Then, with user permission, Oil Change automatically installs the patches.
A flyer in the computer game package alerts users that the free-trial version of Oil Change software is available now as a download at the Red Orb Entertainment Web site (www.redorb.com). This special version of Oil Change will update the following products for 60 days: sound & video drivers (more than 1,000 supported), Riven, Warlords III, Take No Prisoners, Microsoft Windows® 95, Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and all CyberMedia products, including First Aid 97, First Aid 98, Oil Change, UnInstaller, and Guard Dog Deluxe.
At the end of the free-trial period, users have the option of upgrading to standard Oil Change software with a full year of update service for $19.95.
In the future, Red Orb Entertainment plans to make Oil Change available for all of its computer game products.
About Oil Change(tm)
CyberMedia's Oil Change works like a "digital oil change." It automatically replaces outdated software and hardware drivers with new, clean updates. These updates are freely available on many Web sites, but are time-consuming to locate manually. Oil Change scans the PC to see what's needed, checks the Internet for the latest list of available updates, and then, with the users permission, automatically installs them. Oil Change updates are available for thousands of products, including hundreds of best-selling games. New updates are continually added to the Oil Change knowledge base by CyberMedia's OEM partners and by its engineering team.
