CyberMedia Establishes Subsidiary in Japan

Launches Japanese Versions of First Aid 97 and Ships Japanese UnInstaller

TOKYO, JAPAN - Windows World Expo - June 25, 1997 - During a press conference in Tokyo, CyberMedia of Santa Monica, Calif. (Nasdaq:CYBR) announced the formation of CyberMedia K.K., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CyberMedia, Inc. and launched Japanese versions of its best-selling automatic PC problem-fixing software products, First Aid 97, First Aid 97 Deluxe and UnInstaller. CyberMedia UnInstaller 4.5 is now shipping to retail stores throughout Japan. First Aid will ship June 30.

Yoji Matsuo, a former senior executive with Novell Japan, has been named General Manager of the new operation. Offices for CyberMedia K.K. have been established in Shibuya and will house a team of sales, marketing and technical professionals dedicated to developing, marketing and supporting localized Japanese versions of all CyberMedia products. The company is also developing Japanese versions of its UnInstaller and Oil Change products, for shipment in Q4, 1997.

``The Japanese market has tremendous potential for CyberMedia,'' said Leonard Backus, Vice President, International for CyberMedia. ``Japanese personal computer sales increased by 20% from 1995 to 1996 and are projected to reach around 8,800,000 units by the end of 1997 according to IDC Japan. Because PC prices are dropping, we are seeing more entry-level users in Japan. Tremendous growth rates in the Windows 95 installed base is also making the PC platform even more popular for home users. All of these factors will contribute to a growing demand for technical support and the need for CyberMedia's automatic service and support software.''

The Japanese versions are fully localized and have been customized to fix problems with best-selling Japanese software products, as well as Japanese- language versions of popular International applications. In order to support Japanese applications, CyberMedia established a partnership with a content engineering company in Japan and put significant resources into expanding the First Aid's International knowledge base.

``Establishing a wholly-owned subsidiary in Japan before developing a market through third-party distributors is unusual,'' said Backus. ``CyberMedia has taken this step to accelerate the acceptance of the Japanese versions of CyberMedia products to a sophisticated and discerning market. This is a big investment for CyberMedia both in creating infrastructure and staffing.''

The technical support problem in Japan is as severe as it is in the US, if not even more of an issue. According to data from Nikkei Market Access, Japanese users are not satisfied with the technical support they are currently getting from hardware and software companies -- 40% get busy signals and 26% are not satisfied with the level of service provided.

Fixes Problems Automatically

First Aid automatically detects and fixes PC problems, making PCs easier and less frustrating to use, and less expensive for hardware vendors to support. First Aid 97 is currently the 5th top-selling Windows 95 software product in America, according to the PC Data Report. UnInstaller automatically keeps PCs clean of unwanted software and junk files and safely uninstalls any Windows application. Both First Aid and UnInstaller have received the prestigious PC Magazine Editor's Choice award.
