CyberMedia Joins Microsoft and Marimba to Support the Open Software Description Standard
SANTA MONICA, CA - August 15, 1997 -- CyberMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYBR) today announced its support of a new Internet software standard, proposed Thursday by Microsoft Corporation and Marimba.
Called the Open Software Description Standard, (OSD) it is the first open industry specification that will help automate software distribution over the Internet and thus reduce the total cost of PC ownership for corporations. To date, CyberMedia, InstallShield, LANovation, Lotus and Netscape have endorsed the standard.
OSD gives software developers a data format, or vocabulary, to describe software components, their version, their underlying structure and their relationships to other components, thus creating a common specification that will make it easier to distribute, install and maintain software on the Internet.
"As the industry comes together around OSD and other XML-based
specifications, Cybermedia's experience with their Oil Change automatic
software update technology will be a great asset," said Cornelius
Willis, Director of Platform Marketing, Microsoft Corporation. "XML
provides the universal language for data on the Internet; the support of
Cybermedia and others ensures that the industry will quickly get the
details of OSD right."
"We are pleased that Microsoft and Marimba are submitting the OSD standard," said Brad Kingsbury, Chief Technology Officer for CyberMedia. "OSD complements CyberMedia's Oil Change automatic update technology by giving us a single standard by which software installations can be defined, so we can provide an even greater number of patches, drivers and software updates. We look forward to continuing to work with Microsoft and Marimba to help them define this specification, and we intend to fully support it in all of our self-updating software products."
In May 1996, CyberMedia pioneered automatic software updates and installation with it's Oil Change (tm) automatic software updating service, which makes it simple for Microsoft Windows (r) 95 users to automatically update their software applications and hardware drivers via the Internet. Oil Change is America's best-selling automatic update product, and is also available pre-installed on PCs from leading makers.

Automatic Service and Support
CyberMedia's software products utilize the Internet and work with each other to automatically diagnose, fix, update, clean and protect PCs from a wide array of potential problems and reduce the cost of PC ownership for Windows PC users.
The products are built on a common architecture called "ActiveHelp(tm)." Each CyberMedia product runs locally on the PC to diagnose problems. Then, once a problem is identified, it automatically uses the Internet to tap into CyberMedia's "ActiveHelp(tm)", an exclusive, detailed knowledge base of continually-updated, problem-solving information. These problem fixes and updates are then automatically delivered to the user's PC.
The products include First Aid, to fix Windows problems automatically; Oil Change, to update PCs with the latest bug fixes, patches and drivers; UnInstaller, to clean Window's applications; and Guard Dog, to automatically safeguard Internet security and privacy.
Special customized OEM versions of these products are also available pre-installed on millions of hardware products from leading PC makers and distribution partners including AST, CompUSA, Fujitsu, Motorola, Packard Bell-NEC, Phoenix Technologies and Sony.
CyberMedia's products comprise 11.2% of the top 25 retail business titles sold in 1996, according to PC Data. The company's retail software products, First Aid, Oil Change and UnInstaller, are three of the top 15 best-selling business software titles in America. The company was named the fastest-growing software company in the US in 1996 by Standard & Poors and Broadview Associates, was named the seventh-fastest growing public company in Los Angeles County by the Los Angeles Business Journal and was ranked one of the 500 largest software companies in the world by Software Magazine.
