CyberMedia Enhances Its Internet Privacy Software, Ships Guard Dog™ 2.0

PC Software Protects Credit Card Numbers For Online Purchases, Shields Sensitive Data From Third Parties

SANTA MONICA, CA – September 3, 1998 –CyberMedia (NASDAQ:CYBR) today launched Guard Dog™ 2.0, a significantly enhanced version of its popular Guard Dog 1.0, providing comprehensive protection against privacy, security and virus threats on the Internet in a simple, easy-to-use personal computer software product. For a limited time, all current Guard Dog 1.0 owners are eligible for a $20 mail-in rebate with proof of ownership when they buy the product at retail outlets.

"The growth of the Internet has put consumer information and personal privacy at risk," explained Tim Petras, CyberMedia’s manager of privacy and security products. "Incidents of ‘identity theft’ are on the rise. Social security numbers, credit card numbers, and personal access codes to bank accounts are vulnerable. Prudent consumers can now take precautions to protect themselves from unscrupulous online operatives. Guard Dog gives consumers confidence and peace of mind while surfing the net."

Susan Scott, the executive director of TRUSTe, the industry’s leading independent Internet privacy organization, said: "We applaud technology solutions such as CyberMedia’s Guard Dog because > they give consumers the power to ensure their privacy and prevent > identity theft while using the Internet." The TRUSTe coalition is dedicated to building users' trust and confidence on the Internet and licenses its TRUSTe watermark seal of approval to Web sites that conform to its policies.

Protects Against Privacy Threats

Guard Dog 2.0 provides consumers with an easy, automatic way to keep their Web browsing habits private and to control "cookies" and other sophisticated technologies that third parties use to track online behavior. The privacy protection features in Guard Dog 2.0 include:

  • Identity Protector prevents personal information – such as name, address, phone number, or credit card numbers – from being transmitted over non-secure connections (where they may be intercepted);
  • The enhanced Cookie Blocker allows users to selectively accept cookies only from trusted or useful sites and reject all others;
  • Web Trail Cleaner that prevents snoopers from learning which sites were visited during an Internet session;
  • Search Filter automatically blocks search requests entered at popular search engines from being forwarded to other sites that track such behavior.

Whenever Guard Dog 2.0 senses any new threat, it alerts the user with an audible bark so that appropriate action can be taken.

Protects Against Security Threats

Guard Dog 2.0 is designed to automatically block attempts to destroy or capture data on a user's PC. The new version adds several new capabilities, including:

  • File Guardian prevents the secret transmission of any personal or financial file by rogue programs or Trojan Horses (harmful programs that masquerade as useful ones).
  • Gatekeeper works silently in the background to alert the user whenever an unauthorized application tries to access the Internet.
  • Password Manager provides a secure place to store Web password with convenient access.

In addition, since browser manufacturers frequently release patches against new security holes, Guard Dog 2.0 checks that the user's browser has incorporated the latest updates and is set to the right security level.

Protecting Children Online

Most parents are concerned about the reported dangers for children who venture online. Pedophiles and other predators may lure naïve users into revealing names, addresses and phone numbers. Guard Dog 2.0 now adds capabilities to block any attempt to transmit such information without parental approval.

"Innovative solutions like Guard Dog illustrate the industry’s commitment to protecting the security and safety of consumers, especially children," added TRUSTe’s Scott.

Protects Against Viruses

Guard Dog 2.0 now automatically detects and removes viruses from any source, including e-mail attachments, Internet downloads, shared disks, and network files. It can also block harmful programs and hostile Active X controls from entering the PC. Guard Dog 2.0 also features a new easier-to-use interface that can check for viruses whenever the PC is started up.

Price, Availability and System Requirements

Guard Dog 2.0 is available now in retail stores in the United States and Canada for an estimated price of $59.95 USD.

Guard Dog 2.0 runs on any IBM-compatible computer with a 486 or higher processor. It requires Windows 95 or Windows 98, 16MB RAM, 20MB free hard disk space, 256-color VGA monitor, Windows-compatible sound card and an existing Internet connection.
