Earthlink and CyberMedia Announce Software Partnership
CyberMedia taps EarthLink to optimize Internet access for automatic software updates.
Pasadena, Calif. - December 20, 1996 - EarthLink Network, Inc.,
a nationwide Internet access provider (IAP), today announced it has
entered a strategic partnership with CyberMedia to bundle EarthLink's
easy-to-use Internet access software, TotalAccess(, with CyberMedia's
best-selling Oil Change, First Aid 97, and First Aid 97 Deluxe products.
With this partnership, EarthLink becomes the IAP of choice for all
CyberMedia customers. EarthLink's TotalAccess Internet software will be
included in all three of CyberMedia's Internet-enabled self-help software
programs currently being shipped -- including Oil Change, First Aid 97,
and First Aid 97 Deluxe. Customers will be able to gain access to the
Internet through EarthLink to take advantage of the Internet features in
these products.
"EarthLink and CyberMedia have a shared vision of making the Internet a
user-friendly and satisfying experience," said Sky Dayton, founder and
chairman of EarthLink Network. "Together, we are expanding the role of
the Internet as a utilities resource, giving consumers easy access to
Internet-dependent software applications."
Consumers who purchase CyberMedia's Oil Change, First Aid 97 or First
Aid 97 Deluxe software will receive 30 days of free Internet access via
EarthLink Network. EarthLink's $25 set-up fee will also be waived as part
of the deal.
Oil Change is an Internet-enabled program that automatically downloads
and installs updates to popular software applications and hardware
"drivers" directly from Microsoft, Lotus, Intuit, and other vendors. Over the
Internet, Oil Change replaces outdated, buggy software and hardware
drivers with clean, new updates. CyberMedia's other products, First Aid
97 and First Aid Deluxe 97 use information found on the Internet to solve a
wide range of PC problems automatically. First Aid also makes innovative
use of the Internet to search vendor Web sites for "tech tips" and to update
its local knowledge base.
"Technical support is a 'killer application' for the Internet. We believe that
using the Internet to deliver a practical, necessary service like software
updates and PC problem fixes will encourage more new users to sign up
for an online provider and start using the Internet," said CyberMedia
President and CEO, Unni Warrier. "EarthLink, with its customer-focused
philosophy and dedication to providing the best service and support, is an
ideal partner to complement our self-help software."
The promotion, which began on Oct. 28, 1996, was spearheaded by
EarthLink's market development division. The division is dedicated to
providing innovative approaches to product distribution and creating
marketing partnerships with industry-leading companies. The division is
also responsible for providing strategic Internet marketing solutions for
companies seeking to develop online campaigns. Some examples of these
partnerships include ActiVision, Columbia TriStar, Elektra, Celebrity
Sightings, Hard Rock America, New York Daily News, Spiegel Corp.,
United Airlines and Warner Bros.
CyberMedia's mission is to empower computer users to fix computer
problems on their own - before they need to call technical support hotlines
for help. The company's Active Help products include First Aid, the Tech
Support Yellow Pages and Oil Change. CyberMedia's products are
distributed in over 4,000 stores in the United States, Germany, France,
Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Australia, and via OEM
distribution agreements with AST, Fujitsu, Packard Bell-NEC and Phoenix
