CYBERMEDIA AND
GATEWAY COOPERATE TO MAKE PERSONAL COMPUTERS EASIER FOR BEGINNER
AND INTERMEDIATE USERS
Gateway Begins Shipping
PCs with Customized Software for Computer Education and Maintenance
Santa Monica, Calif., July 08, 1998 --
CyberMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYBR), the leader in automatic technical
support for personal computers, today announced the results of its
joint development effort with Gateway (NYSE:GTW), the brand loyalty
leader, according to the Ziff-Davis 1998 Technology User Profile.
The two companies have cooperated over the last year to develop
a customized program that makes personal computers easier for beginner
and intermediate users. Gateway is now shipping the HelpSpot™ Software,
which is factory-installed on all Gateway™ G-Series and GP-Series
desktop PCs.
"Working with CyberMedia was a natural partnership for us," said
Jim Collas, Gateway's senior vice president of product development
and management. "The combination of their expertise in automatic
technical support with our totally customized hardware has resulted
in the HelpSpot -- a truly innovative product to help our clients
better understand how to operate and maintain a Gateway PC."
"This relationship creates a significant new channel for CyberMedia's
automatic technical support technology," said Kanwal Rekhi, CyberMedia's
chairman and CEO. "This OEM relationship will give CyberMedia's
technology exposure to hundreds of thousands of new and intermediate
users over the next year."
When a Gateway user starts HelpSpot for the first time, the program
provides a short video tutorial that explains how the program works.
HelpSpot enables Gateway customers to keep their PCs in top performing
condition by providing how-to videos, explanations for computer
terms and answers to frequently asked questions. With Internet access,
users can take free courses about popular software programs including
Windows, PowerPoint®, Word and Excel.
In developing HelpSpot, CyberMedia and Gateway customized CyberMedia's
award-winning First Aid product to meet Gateway's specific needs.
HelpSpot automatically provides solutions and answers for computer
users and then links them directly into Gateway's technical support
via e-mail for additional information and help. HelpSpot also includes
a trial version of Oil Change™ which allows the user to easily update
their Gateway PC with new drivers from the Internet.
